Riot Games to Address Blue Essence Concerns Following Unsuccessful Season Launch
In a recent blog post, Riot’s game designer, Riot Meddler, admitted that the changes to the Blue Essence system didn’t go as planned. Riot had intended to improve Blue Essence (BE) earning rates, aiming for consistency or slight increases for all players, especially targeting newer and more casual players. However, the outcome has been less than ideal for the majority of the community.
“We wanted the BE income to be fair across the board, with the changes being particularly beneficial for casual players,” said Meddler. However, the shift ended up reducing BE rates for many, and the lowered XP made it more challenging for new accounts to reach level 30 and unlock Ranked play. Riot failed to communicate one critical change: the shift of Champion Capsules from account-level rewards to the new Battle Pass. “We should have been clearer about this move,” Meddler added.
Addressing the Issue with Fixes
To resolve the issue, Riot is adjusting the system to increase BE rewards. They will boost the free Pass earn rates, raising the total BE from milestones from 4,750 to 9,000, and significantly increasing repeatable Epilogue milestones from 50 to 750 BE. These fixes will be implemented in Patch 25.S1.2 and will be available before the Act 2 Pass launches.
However, the team clarified that they cannot retroactively adjust the Act 1 Pass. Instead, a one-time mission will be provided to grant players 4,250 BE, which will be available with Patch 25.S1.3. Additionally, the final Champion Capsule in the Act 2 Pass will be changed to a Glorious Champion Capsule, providing better rewards.
Improving Account XP and Progression
Riot also plans to increase account XP by 40%, bringing it closer to previous levels. Meddler explained that the lack of consideration for the First Win of the Day (FWotD) XP bonus contributed to slower account progression, which hindered new players from accessing Ranked play more quickly. “We failed to account for the loss of FWotD, which dramatically impacted account progression,” Meddler said.
With these changes, Riot hopes to better balance Blue Essence rewards and account progression, aiming for a more rewarding experience for both casual and hardcore players. These adjustments are set to improve the system’s overall fairness and ensure smoother access to content for everyone.
